How to get Apple CarPlay in your Toyota Aygo

Between 2014 and 2018 the Toyota Aygo, Citroen C1 and Peugeot 108 had the X-Play Stereo in which claimed to have AppInCar for connecting your phone to your stereo. In reality the technology doesn’t work and many drivers of older Toyota Aygo’s want to know how to get CarPlay in their Toyota Aygo.

There are 2 ways you can retrofit your Toyota Aygo, Citroen C1 or Peugeot 108 and enjoy Apple’s CarPlay app and in this blog we explain what you need to achieve this.

Getting CarPlay in your Toyota Aygo using a 3rd party head unit

You can replace the existing head unit in your Toyota Aygo, Citroen C1 or Peugeot 108 by purchasing a 3rd party head unit and fitting it yourself (or better still, paying someone to fit it for you).

To do this you’ll need…

  • A head unit with a depth less than 150mm
  • Some extra cables to convert your existing ones
  • A new fasica

Even with the less deep head units you’ll still need to remove a vertical piece of plastic from your car once you remove the existing head unit but this won’t make any difference to your car and won’t stop you putting the original stereo back in should you want to.

There are a few options but our favourite is the Sony XAV-AX1005DB Media Receiver which looks great, has a handy front USB cable and is packed with plenty of features including Apple’s CarPlay. You’ll also need the facia kit pictured above too. You’ll also need a cable kit which you can pick up here.

How to find a CarPlay Toyota Aygo Stereo

The second approach is to track down a secondhand Aygo stereo. You can do this through searching on eBay and looking out for one with 3 buttons.

You can get these directly through Toyota but not all dealers can source them and those that can charge around £2000!

Whilst these do appear on eBay it’s not very often and so the best way to find a Toyota Aygo Stereo with CarPlay is to use the model numbers and a website called allegro.pl (a Polish eBay…so you’ll need translate switched on in your browser).

The 2014 onwards Toyota Aygo stereo model numbers are:

86140-YV020 for the model with DAB.

86140-YV010 for the model without DAB.

These CarPlay stereo model numbers also apply to the Citroen C1 and Peugeot 108.

If you search for these model numbers on Allegro you’ll get results and then you can purchase and wait. Fitting it is as simple as unplugging your existing one and plugging in the new one. If the Allegro seller doesn’t ship to your country then check out Shippn which is what I used to get my Toyota Aygo CarPlay stereo to the UK. All in all the stereo plus shipping cost me just under £300.

And that’s how you retrofit your 2014 Toyota Aygo with CarPlay!

Either method works well and has it’s pro’s and con’s but the upgrade is certainly worth it and well worth doing!

  1. bought the sony and cable/fascia kit, microphone doesn’t work (even the one that came with it!) and unable to get reversing camera working with it either. Sent back for refund. Avoid!
