Controlling Aqara G3’s Privacy Mode in Apple Home Automation

Verdict: The Aqara G3, despite its affordable price, offers impressive control and privacy features when integrated with Apple’s HomeKit.

Unboxing & Initial Setup

First impressions? The Aqara G3 hub is sleek and compact. Setting it up was a breeze – just plug it in, download the Mi Home app (yes, despite being an Aqara product), follow the prompts, and you’re ready to go.

Integrating with Apple HomeKit

To use the G3 with HomeKit, you’ll need to remove it from the Mi Home app first. Then, add it back as a ‘new’ device, choosing the ‘Apple HomeKit’ option this time around. Once paired with your iPhone or iPad via Bluetooth, the hub will appear in the Home app.

Controlling Privacy Mode

Here’s where things get interesting. The G3’s privacy mode allows you to disable all smart device control except for scenes and automations. To enable it:

  1. Tap on the Aqara G3 hub in the Home app.
  2. Scroll down and tap ‘Details’.
  3. Under ‘Privacy’, toggle on ‘Enable Privacy Mode’.

Now, only your predefined scenes and automations will work. To re-enable full control, simply toggle off ‘Privacy Mode’.

Final Thoughts

The Aqara G3 is a powerful little hub that punches above its weight in the smart home scene. Its seamless integration with HomeKit, combined with the flexibility of privacy mode, makes it an excellent choice for those looking to build out their Apple ecosystem.
