Meross MTS215 Smart Thermostat Review – Electric Underfloor Heating Control
The Meross MTS215 Smart Thermostat is a strong choice for controlling electric underfloor heating with a modern design, responsive touchscreen, and optional external sensor support at an excellent £50 price point. While the device has no multi-user app features or built-in geofencing outside of Apple Home setups, these specific limitations are workarounds I have managed through custom automations.
If you’re looking for a smart thermostat specifically designed for electric underfloor heating, this unit is currently the only Matter-compatible option available on the market. It builds upon my earlier review from early 2024 with an upgrade path to include Matter connectivity and a refreshed look while retaining that excellent price point around £50.
Design
The Meross MTS215 features a modern, rounded design alongside an updated LED touchscreen display that is brighter and more responsive for manual controls. Although the rounded edges might appear slightly off if mounted on a standard backbox due to spacing issues overall they look nicer than older rigid models while remaining minimalistic.
Specifications
This device features compatibility strictly with electric underfloor heating, though boiler versions also exist elsewhere in their lineup. It connects via 2.4GHz Wi-Fi which works even if your router has only one band enabled for the network configuration used at home or when you add SmartThings and other devices without a hub. Additional Matter support allows integration directly into Apple Home ecosystems alongside Alexa Google Home as expected.
Installation
I installed mine myself while upgrading from an MTS200 though professional installation is recommended if unfamiliar with wiring entirely to ensure safety standards are met during the process on mains electricity. The redesigned back and cable positions may require additional space in your backbox, which I solved using a spacing plate purchased separately for ease of mounting into existing wall boxes.
Cabling
The installation instructions include helpful stickers but also provide clearly labelled cables on both the old and new thermostats to identify connections easily. Ensure power is off before beginning installation so you can remove heat safely from circuits while working inside the box for maintenance access later when needed by yourself or professionals.
Pairing
Pairing the MTS215 is simple via the Meross app where scanning the Matter QR code on both the device and instruction manual gets it added automatically to Apple Home if using iOS devices directly without needing third party bridges. You can also use other platforms though advanced controls remain available primarily within the dedicated application interface.
Usage and Features
You’ll likely want a combination of control methods for full functionality so I usually toggle between applications based on task requirements:
Meross App Controls: This app lets you view current temperature readings alongside humidity levels to monitor room conditions accurately. You can also switch heating modes, schedule specific times each day or week, and adjust the display brightness for nighttime visibility in any dark room.
Cooling Automation Features: Advanced controls include child lock settings which prevent accidental adjustments from kids at home while frost detection stops freezing damage to pipes during cold spells. Notifications can be configured alongside open window detection that pauses heating if you forget to close curtains properly before leaving the house after setting schedules.
App Integration Details: Exposing three individual devices within Apple Home allows for more flexible automation logic than single-device setups found elsewhere in your ecosystem. Presence detection automations solve the lack of geofencing I mentioned earlier by triggering heating routines based on phone locations or movement sensors installed nearby without requiring manual intervention every morning.
Scheduling and Night Modes: Schedules can be set for specific days with separate configurations available if you have different work schedules during weekdays versus weekends. Using Apple Home, I’ve created automations for morning daytime evening night which only run when someone is actually present to save energy costs throughout the week while keeping everyone comfortable inside without wasting electricity outside occupied hours.
Voice and Smart Controls: This device integrates well with your existing smart home setup though remember it does require specific settings like 2.4GHz Wi-Fi connection for proper connectivity if you try to mix networks between different devices within single zone configuration setups inside residential properties across multiple floors or zones.
Verdict
The main downside is the lack of geofencing and multi-user support in the Meross app, but this can be managed using Apple Home automations as I described above. At £50 it’s excellent value for a Matter-compatible smart thermostat designed specifically to control underfloor heating efficiently.
