Habi Smart Home — Updated Review

In December, my review of the Habi Smart Home Heating solution identified significant connectivity issues that necessitated a return within the 30-day window after experiencing unreliable heating performance during November. After returning it due to these problems and subsequently switching to alternative Aqara devices for reliable operation over several weeks, I have been using an updated configuration with the original Habi system solid now since March to provide this comprehensive update on its current status.

The Initial Experience and Connectivity Struggles

I picked up the Habi Smart Home solution myself back towards the end of October and immediately proceeded into setting it up. I wired in the boiler control, paired the wireless thermostat, added three radiator valves, and set up a series of complicated Apple Home Automations with Siri Shortcuts for geofencing as part of my heating schedule.

I then switched to using Aqara devices because that setup worked pretty reliably and well at that time. However, within a couple of weeks after the initial Habi deployment, devices started losing connection to the boiler, which was frustrating in November when you want reliable heating for cold nights. I contacted Habi customer support directly, and we tried various troubleshooting steps together, but ultimately returned it because I needed heating that worked consistently without manual intervention.

Habi’s Response and Follow-up Testing

In the meantime, while waiting on other options or during my testing phase, Habi got one of their engineers to email me personally. He actually works for their parent company Salus, who are really well established in the heating space.

I explained that I had returned the equipment and offered to come and set up everything as it was configured before so they could monitor and debug remotely.

As a developer myself, I know how frustrating it is when you can’t replicate an issue consistently. I also knew from other reviews online at that point that others had reported signal issues too.

I agreed to let them come over under the condition that they didn’t wire everything back into my boiler initially because I needed my heating system operational immediately for daily use. Rob came along, hooked up a plug to the wireless receiver and attached some valves to the radiator thermostats so we could put everything back in exactly the same places as before.

The team told me they had updated the firmware between visits or during that period of testing. Over the next few weeks following this intervention, I continued to monitor it all carefully via both the Habi app and Apple Home applications directly on my phone screen. The updates held up well enough through winter conditions, so nothing disconnected again.

By the start of March, after validating reliability with firmware stability verified by their support team, I wired everything back up permanently to my boiler. Then we set up some schedules using Home Assistant for geofencing integration, letting it run heating without issues since that date and onwards through warmer weather periods following initial validation.

About Habi Hardware Specifications

This is a Matter over Thread compatible smart heating solution currently available on the market. The base pack containing the boiler control has physical controls for operation in addition to the network features, creating the thread backbone itself so it does not require Wi-Fi dependency.

The device can work with condensing boilers and those which utilize separate hot water controls as standard units usually found in UK homes or European installations. Those physical buttons provide you easy ways to turn heating on or off if smart control functions fail completely due to network outages, ensuring safety during power issues. The base pack also comes with the wireless thermostat included within it.

I do like that design aspect especially considering the white finish and large twist knob for adjustments directly on device rather than tapping a touchscreen screen all day long which can get frustrating in cold rooms when wearing gloves or handling dirty hands after cooking dinner.

This pack will cost you around £70, making it pretty affordable compared to many other brands that charge extra monthly fees later on without warning users first before billing them. That physical hardware approach also ensures no hidden subscriptions ever kick back your bill unexpectedly even if app service ends temporarily for any reason outside my control.

Compatibility and Features

Matter compatibility means it works with SmartThings, Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, and the open standard ecosystem of Home Assistant seamlessly together without needing proprietary bridge hardware usually sold separately elsewhere in stores online globally today. The radiator valves are also Matter over Thread compatible.

I have paired them well first to Habi Hub then secondary matter controllers like Apple Home so they can call for heat accurately from those thermostats instead of just relying on room thermocouples which might lag behind reality.

This allows those TRVs (Thermostatic Radiator Valves) to request specific heating loads based on schedule needs, not ambient temperature drift alone. The Habi app as a whole is something I dive into more during my original review documentation before returning item for fixes but if you don’t mind about having geofencing constraints initially then schedules and boost functions are set up easily within the application settings menu without advanced coding knowledge required to operate basic features effectively enough.

If deep diving specifically into specs or looking at compatibility charts with legacy devices, I have put my original review notes elsewhere in detail regarding specific protocol handshakes used by older valves that do not support standard Matter standards yet but still connect via bridge functionality within supported firmware releases prior to the latest 2024 iteration updates provided directly from manufacturer website downloads.

Temperature Accuracy Issues

Whilst those TRVs definitely let you adjust temperature offset settings in advanced configurations, I find that their raw reported temperature is not very accurate when radiator heat cycles are running on continuously without breaks during colder spells like early mornings or late nights which affects perceived comfort significantly.

This issue is pretty common for TRV technology across brands but these units seem worse than others tested by independent reviewers previously. This accuracy variance suggests I probably wouldn’t recommend just using them alone with the Habi app if accurate floor temperatures are your primary goal metric rather than general heating control availability which works fine most days.

My setup is bit more complicated though, so if you’re willing to have a similar set up like mine then it does work well and accurately over extended periods of time. Basically, I’m using Home Assistant integration specifically called Better Thermostat that allows me selecting different temperature source from the TRV readout itself.

This bypasses poor sensors by integrating room-level data elsewhere while doing all complicated temperature offsetting required to ensure valve still acts correctly even if internal readings drift slightly over time. Should you want a simpler out-of-box solution without advanced configuration requirements or integration knowledge, I’d go with the Tado X range instead of starting fresh on this platform.

Should You Buy Habi?

As it stands currently in market conditions and testing results gathered so far during late 2023 into early 2024 period following firmware updates, is one most affordable Matter over Thread heating solutions out there available now without requiring subscriptions that drain monthly budget unnecessarily.

Not everyone should buy this though if they have specific needs different from my setup which relies heavily on Home Assistant ecosystem integration rather than just simple app buttons. If you just need the wireless thermostat and main boiler control for home basic usage, then it’s great – a bit of fiddling in Apple Home can achieve geofencing so your heating turns off when away.

If you don’t care about that specific feature where system knows if I’m at house or not outside local IP address changes from ISP router configuration logic, the Habi app is great for basic scheduling without third party integrations. However, smart TRVs might be limited unless utilizing advanced setup methods because on-board temperature sensors are too sensitive to minor drafts affecting readings during high ambient pressure drops typical in UK winter conditions.

Pairing can also take some time and does timeout occasionally with the initial connection sequence if network load is heavy from other devices like video calls happening simultaneously. Out of three units I’ve got, two were fine initially upon installation without needing reset multiple times by user intervention manually restarting hardware unit itself to fix communication loss.

If you want a simpler solution ready immediately after unboxing then Tado X range might be better choice as it’s also robust with Matter support but requires specific integration considerations for existing infrastructure upgrades currently planned or executed within renovation timelines typically undertaken during summer months before heating season starts again next year usually around late September depending on region specifics regarding weather forecasts.

I will continue to monitor my setup over the long term and provide updates as necessary when firmware receives new revisions that may address pairing timeouts further down line after launch date. I’ll link products available at current store prices in standard online listings below for comparison before purchase decision made by any consumer considering options currently listed on retailer websites within their preferred region.

Conclusion

Overall, Habi is an affordable Matter over Thread heating solution that works well for basic setups if you prioritize low cost and app simplicity without deep Home Assistant integration requirements. However, if your goal involves a more advanced setup or accuracy from TRV readouts during operation cycles where sensor drift becomes problematic regardless of offset correction applied in configuration screen, then it might not be best choice over higher tiered competitors offering tighter thermal isolation.

I plan to continue testing my system and provide updates on firmware stability if any future issues arise after winter cycle ends. Let me know your thoughts regarding this product line based on your own experience with smart heating systems currently deployed in similar residential properties across UK housing associations or private rentals alike so we can help each other choose right tools for home.

Home Assistant Automation Triggers Explained

Ever wanted to create complex automations with Home Assistant but found the ‘when’ and ‘if’ sections confusing? I’ve got you covered. In this guide, we’ll dive into setting up automation triggers in Home Assistant, explaining the ‘when’ and ‘if’ sections, and demonstrating how to stack multiple events to create powerful automations.

Understanding Automation Triggers

Automation triggers in Home Assistant are the starting point for any automation. They define what initiates your automation – a sensor reading, a schedule, or an event like a button press. Understanding and setting up these triggers is crucial for creating automated routines.

‘When’ Section

The ‘when’ section is where you’ll specify the trigger condition(s). This could be a sensor state change (‘on’ or ‘off’), a schedule, or even another automation running. For example, you might set up an automation to turn on your living room lights at sunset.

‘If’ Section

The ‘if’ section allows you to add additional conditions for the trigger to occur. This is useful when you want more control over when your automation runs. For instance, you might want your lights to only turn on if someone’s home.

Stacking Multiple Events

One of the powerful features of Home Assistant is its ability to stack multiple events to create complex automations. This means you can combine multiple triggers and conditions to create sophisticated routines. For example, you might want your coffee maker to turn on at 6 AM only if it’s a weekday and you’re home.

Remember, the key to creating effective automations is experimenting with different triggers and conditions until you find what works best for your lifestyle.

I’ve been using this system for about three weeks, so I can share what actually happens in real-world conditions rather than just promising features. Here is my assessment of whether you really need to buy into all the extras before getting started. If your primary goal is simple monitoring and voice assistant integration without needing advanced local control or history retention, you might not need the Home Hub Mini right away. However, if you rely on local storage for privacy and want full feed visibility in ecosystems like Apple Home via Home Assistant, then purchasing that hub becomes a necessary step to unlock those capabilities properly.

Do You Need the Reolink Home Hub Mini?

Before getting into specifics about how this camera tracks objects or handles battery life under load on its own power source for weeks at a time without needing wall charging, it is worth asking whether you need to invest in the hub first. For most people who simply want basic motion alerts sent straight to their phone through the Reolink app along with optional Alexa triggers and Google Home actions, that standalone camera works perfectly fine on its own. But for users running a more complex smart home stack involving Home Assistant where live video feeds are crucial for automations or viewing inside specific apps like Apple Home at once within the interface there requires connecting to the Hub unit specifically because it handles routing those connections locally without needing subscription fees constantly incurring over months of usage time on your card plan.

Price and Design

The camera itself, combined with a Reolink Solar Panel package sent by Reolink as part of my review kit, sits at £170 when accounting for the cost of the solar panel component that is included in this specific bundle offering. A 5% discount is currently available if you are ready to purchase via the link associated on this page or check Prime Day sales which may be running alongside current stock availability depending where your region falls within shipping zones at present moment today too. The physical unit has a clean white body design that matches most outdoor aesthetics nicely while allowing for vertical rotation capabilities of up 355 degrees across its horizontal range plus tilt functionality to look downwards or upwards as needed by site placement conditions around windowsills versus overhanging trees above porch area.

Specs That Matter

The built-in battery inside the chassis is rated at 20,000mAh capacity which means it delivers power long enough for up to 96 hours of continuous recording when active or even extends run time significantly in PIR trigger mode capturing around 300 seconds of footage per day on average during typical operation cycles throughout winter months where sunlight might be less reliable anyway. Even with a grey and wet weather pattern lasting the first full week without charging fully before deployment started testing battery levels barely moved noticeably despite rain which is great for users in climates that are notoriously damp.

Storage Options

If you want to store footage locally, there is no internal microSD slot directly inside the camera casing itself but rather it relies on a dedicated Home Hub Mini device if available or use an external card inserted separately into either unit as supported by firmware configuration settings. You can add a microSD up to 512GB capacity which isn’t included in base price of course so you might want that budgeted in separately beforehand before purchase happens unless plan involves cloud storage subscription service monthly billing cycle instead for those who prefer offsite redundancy rather than risk local hardware theft or water damage issues from weather exposure alone.

Subscriptions

You get compatible access to Alexa and Google Home right out of the box without needing any special setup steps beyond initial pairing process through application interface on your phone. Most features work with Home Assistant too, but note that if you do not have a Hub Mini connected yet for full video feed integration into those systems properly you will need cloud storage which costs £3 per month or up to 5 cameras total plan available at reduced rate currently offered sometimes via promotional pricing adjustments by company policy.

Setup and Installation

The camera box plus the solar panel packaging include all necessary screws fittings cable ties for alternative mounting methods where drilling into walls is not an option for you specifically due to rental restrictions or structural limitations preventing permanent alterations in building fabric without permission obtained first via landlord authorization process before proceeding with installation steps planned ahead of time.

Mounting Process

To charge the camera first then pair it through Reolink app which walks you through connecting WiFi network successfully on initial setup session where most users should be able to skip troubleshooting unless interference issues exist nearby causing connection drops intermittently when testing range performance around house exterior perimeter locations.

Day-to-Day Use and Performance

Motion notifications come through promptly with thumbnail previews included in push notification alerts that arrive on mobile devices quickly enough for you to verify what movement triggered alert without needing to open camera live stream feed immediately which might save battery life or data usage depending how often checks made manually within application interface daily.

Detection Accuracy

It picks up people and animals reliably even at night when ambient light drops significantly below threshold required for infrared sensors alone but instead uses colour mode combined with built-in LED light to show true colours regardless of lighting conditions available around sensor location point currently monitored by camera software algorithms processing video stream in real time.

Night Mode Tracking

Tracking animals in the dark works well too because auto tracking settings allow it to follow people, animals or vehicles depending on what configuration you choose within application menus which are accessible from app dashboard via tap interface navigation system used for adjusting parameters live without needing reset factory settings unless necessary.

Night Video Quality

The night video quality is the best I’ve seen on a battery outdoor camera and browsing clips in the app allows easy downloading footage while you can switch between lower resolution stream optimized for data saving or full resolution by toggling from Fluent to Clear depending how much detail matters at moment captured currently being viewed.

Home Assistant and Apple Home Integration

When talking about integration with Home Assistant there’s no native support directly within that ecosystem requiring you use homebridge or similar bridge software for getting video feed available properly inside those custom interfaces which is where it gets a bit involved if you really need advanced control over automation rules based on camera triggers rather than just receiving simple notifications when motion detected by PIR sensor located near driveway entrance point.

Streamlining Apple Home: Adding Non-Apple Devices with Home Assistant

After experimenting with integrating non-Apple devices into my Apple Home using Home Assistant, I’m excited to share this game-changing experience. If you’re managing multiple devices, this method is a must-try.

My Experience: Seamless Integration

Setting up non-Apple devices like the Xiaomi Mi Smart Plug and Sonoff S26 with Apple Home via Home Assistant was surprisingly smooth. Within minutes, I had my new devices appearing in the Apple Home app alongside my existing iPad, iPhone, and Apple TV.

Key Steps: A Walkthrough

The process involves installing the necessary plugins for each device type on your Home Assistant instance (e.g., Xiaomi MiIO and Sonoff). Then, it’s simply a matter of discovering your devices through the respective plugins.

Benefits: Unifying Your Smart Home Experience

With this setup, you gain control over your non-Apple devices directly from the Apple Home app. This includes creating scenes and automations involving both Apple and third-party devices. Plus, updates to both Home Assistant and Apple Home ensure ongoing compatibility.

I’ve been using the Aqara LED light strip T1 for about a month now, and in this review, I’ll be sharing my thoughts on its performance, features, and overall value. As with any product I receive to review, Aqara had no say in what I’d write – my opinions are entirely my own.

Price and Value

The T1 light strip is priced at £43 for a 2m length, which is around average for similar products. However, it’s worth noting that you can extend the strip by purchasing additional 1m segments for just £15. While the length of the strip may not be as long as some other options on the market, its quality and features more than make up for this.

Specifications

To get the most out of the T1 light strip, you’ll need to have an Aqara hub – I already had the M3 hub, but if you’re new to Aqara’s ecosystem, their hubs start at just £30. The T1 strip supports up to 16 million colours and can be used to create custom effects using the Aqara app. It also has built-in Zigbee repeater functionality, making it a great option for those looking to expand their smart home setup.

One of the standout features of the T1 is its support for RGBIC (Red, Green, Blue, and Individual Colour) configuration, which allows you to control each of the ten light strip segments separately. This level of customization is perfect for creating complex lighting effects or syncing with music. The app also includes a built-in music mode that works seamlessly with popular smart home systems like Apple Home, Alexa, Google Home, and Home Assistant.

Design

The design of the T1 light strip is sleek and modern, making it easy to hide away in any room. The back of the strip features some high-quality sticky tape that has held up well over the past month. I was impressed by the premium feel of the light strip itself, which I’d say feels even better than a Hue light strip.

Before the plug, you’ll find some physical controls and what appears to be a microphone for local music sync. This is a nice touch, as it allows you to control the lighting effects without needing to reach for your phone or tablet.

Setup

Setting up the T1 light strip was a breeze – I recommend pairing it with the Aqara app before fitting it into place. Once paired, you can choose which Aqara hub it binds to and then add it to other apps like Apple Home and Home Assistant.

As my Aqara Hub was already connected to these systems, the light strip appeared automatically, and I just needed to assign it to the correct room. From there, I added it to any scenes and automations I wanted to use it in – for example, turning on my living room lights when I enter the room.

Scenes and Exports

The Aqara app’s ability to export scenes is one of its standout features. This allows you to create custom effects and music sync toggles that can be shared with other apps like Apple Home, Google Home, and Home Assistant.

To do this, simply create a scene in the Aqara app for turning on music sync or dynamic RGB effects, then head into the profile part of the app and connect to the ecosystem you want to sync to. For example, if you’re using Apple Home, you can sync your scene with just a few clicks.

Real-World Experience

I’ve been using the T1 light strip for several weeks now, and I’m impressed by its performance. The colours are vibrant and bright, and it responds quickly to any changes in lighting effects or music sync.

One thing to note is that if you’re using a speaker higher up and your plug with the mic for the lights near the floor, you may need to increase the sensitivity of the music sync feature. However, this can be easily adjusted within the app.

Verdict

Overall, I’m extremely impressed by the Aqara LED light strip T1. Its high-quality design, vibrant colours, and seamless integration with popular smart home systems make it a standout product in its class. The ability to export dynamic effects and music sync toggles via scenes to third-party apps is also a major plus.

While there are some minor downsides – such as the lack of light mapping feature – I believe this product is well worth the investment. If you’re looking for a reliable, high-quality smart lighting solution that integrates seamlessly with your existing setup, look no further than the Aqara LED light strip T1.

As always, if you’d like to purchase the T1 light strip or learn more about it, I’ve included a link below. If you have any questions or would like to share your own experiences with this product, feel free to leave them in the comments section!

Confession: I Started Using Home Assistant

There is a confession I need to make that might surprise some long-time followers. For several months now, I’ve been running my smart home on Home Assistant. If you follow this channel regularly, you know I have always leaned heavily into the capabilities of Apple Home and Shortcuts for automations—that was genuinely how things stood until recently when reliability issues pushed me in a different direction. While I believe that advanced automations using Apple Home are still excellent for most everyday users without much friction over time, eventually those platforms hit certain limitations where more complex logic becomes difficult to manage properly inside the standard interface or Shortcuts alone.

Home Assistant Isn’t What I Expected

I want to address one major concern immediately: reputation.

For years, Home Assistant had this distinct image of being extremely technical and inaccessible for non-experts. You never have long in online discussions before someone starts talking about YAML files or command lines configurations which seemed intimidating at first glance. But honestly speaking as we get into 2026 and beyond that isn’t the full picture anymore regarding how easy it is to actually use today.

From my personal experience, Home Assistant now comes across as being roughly just as simple to set up for daily tasks compared to something like Homey which was previously a go-to alternative. I realized this truth after moving my Raspberry Pi setup from running inside Homebridge over specifically to the HomeAssistant platform properly diving into it several months ago.

And yes, I admit that I’m actually a developer so technically speaking if needed there are advanced setups involving YAML files or command lines that you could handle—but in reality I’ve written very little of those config scripts myself. Almost everything done is configured directly through the visual interface available within their app rather than manual file editing.

And yes, regarding Homey Self-Hosted solutions which some might have seen discussed before on this channel—if you saw my video referencing that topic earlier—you’ll know I actually think Home Assistant feels like currently it’s often a better overall option for those looking to expand control without the heavy reliance on third-party apps.

Why I Switch

The biggest driving reason behind this switch ultimately comes down to how automation works specifically.

I have maintained that Apple Home automations are actually very reliable and functional, though eventually users run into limitations where you need something more advanced than the native platform provides. While it is technically possible with Apple Home plus Shortcuts to try to achieve these advanced setups those automations quickly become complicated if not nearly impossible to manage for long-term maintenance.

That was exactly what led me away from purely relying on that ecosystem initially and toward Home Assistant which offered far more control over the logic structures needed. Initially, I ran my instance of it directly on a Raspberry Pi device locally within home network infrastructure so everything stayed private there without requiring cloud dependencies for processing or storage.

More recently though because you want to experiment with things like local AI processing capabilities inside your own environment—I’ve moved every single one of those functions onto an M4 Mac mini running Home Assistant directly from a virtual machine context setup. I might make a dedicated video on that specific hardware architecture configuration in the future since it performs differently depending upon resources available there—but for most people out there just looking to get started quickly there’s actually quite different route which is simpler.

The Easiest Way to Get Started

If you want absolutely easiest possible Home Assistant setup path without requiring technical build skills or flash processes I’d recommend looking at the official HomeAssistant Green product from their store directly. It costs around £150, so it’s more expensive than many traditional smart home hubs on the market out there right now but it’s capable of far more functionality within a single unit.

The biggest advantage is definitely simplicity rather than raw power alone because pre-installed software means no need to flash SD cards manually or install operating systems yourself. You essentially buy into platform support directly from Nabu Casa which was founded by the original creators themselves, so buying their hardware helps support ongoing development of this open source community project alongside getting a device that works out of the box.

Matter Thread and Zigbee Support

However there are important considerations regarding protocols you want to connect with specifically if you look at things like Matter over Thread or standard Zigbee devices together simultaneously which often confuses new users initially.

If you need support for matter thread zigbee devices all in one go you’ll also want the Home Assistant Connect ZBT-2 add-on module added into that picture. That costs around £50 depending on sales prices currently available today but here’s an important limitation worth noting before purchasing: it can either handle Matter over Thread or Zigbee not both at same time so if your home setup needs full support for matter alongside thread plus zigbee together you will likely want to use separate hardware dongles.

DIY vs Appliance Approach

The Home Assistant Green definitely isn’t the most powerful standalone hardware available in general market terms but for getting started quickly it’s probably actually easiest route that doesn’t involve soldering or complex build steps at minimum. If you prefer DIY approach using standard components something like a Raspberry Pi 5 with an SSD attached drive is extremely reliable too—that was what I originally used during first setup phase—but does require more technical work upfront to get configured correctly via command lines initially.

Initial Setup Process

The actual process of setting up the platform once hardware arrives or installed locally is refreshingly simple in my opinion especially compared to other platforms requiring multiple apps on device side. You create an account for your cloud integration, set your physical location coordinates so network scan works better then HomeAssistant immediately starts scanning your entire home network automatically looking for compatible smart devices attached via Wi-Fi.

Remote Access and Security

For anyone planning to enable remote access into their dashboard or automations I’d strongly recommend enabling two-factor authentication specifically for security reasons before connecting from outside of trusted local networks later on. Regarding specific solutions for keeping that connection secure, easiest solution remains subscribing directly through HomeAssistant Cloud service provided officially by the platform team.

Adding Matter Devices

If you want to integrate devices inside AppleHome first using matter protocol then moving them into Assistant is actually really straightforward compared to older bridge methods requiring configuration steps in every app manually. You simply open your home application go into device settings put that specific item into pairing mode before opening the HomeAssistant dashboard interface yourself.

Migrate Devices

You can choose two main paths forward once you are comfortable with local network scanning and initial account creation done:

Start completely fresh on new system OR gradually migrate existing devices without resetting your entire smart home ecosystem which might be risky if not planned carefully. For me personally HomeAssistant serves two main purposes right now in my daily usage routine.

Bridging Non-Apple Devices

Firstly it allows me to bring non-ApappleHome compatible devices particularly Tuya protocol gadgets into Apple home using a feature called HomeKit Bridge functionality which is similar conceptually what Homebridge software does without running on separate server. Secondly I wanted more advanced and flexible automation platform that doesn’t require relying entirely on third-party cloud APIs for simple tasks like lighting control based on specific time triggers or sensor thresholds.

Selecting the Device

Finally when moving devices into the system you can open AppleHome application directly Go to device settings select add new items then open HomeAssistant Dashboard again navigate Settings Devices and Services tab choose Add Device button Select your desired category for Matter protocol support finish pairing process. Choose Add Device Selection or similar option available depending on firmware version of running software at current time being displayed when adding devices from external sources into local server.
