The Sensereo MSC-1 is, as far as I can tell, the first ever Matter over Thread smoke and carbon monoxide alarm. Before this, the closest we had was Google’s Nest — which only worked in Apple Home through Home Assistant or a third-party dongle. Google have since discontinued the Nest line, which has been a long time coming.

Sensereo sent me the MSC-1 to review but had no idea what I was going to say.

Price

The MSC-1 is $70. That puts it above non-smart smoke alarms, but below what the Nest used to cost — and it does the job of two sensors. Check out the Sensereo MSC-1

Specs

Being Matter compatible, it works with Apple Home, Homey, SmartThings and Google Home. It also works with Home Assistant, where you get a few extra options. I tested it with both Home Assistant and Apple Home.

The front of the device has a screen showing a real-time CO reading in ppm, and that figure is exposed to Apple Home alongside the battery level — for both the smoke and CO detectors separately.

For smoke detection it uses infrared scattering technology and can detect flaming fires as well as smouldering smoke. It meets the relevant European safety standards and works perfectly fine even if you never pair it to a smart home.

Power comes from a CR123 battery rated for around 3 years of normal use. The device can be ceiling or wall mounted.

One thing worth noting: there’s no scheduled self-test option in Apple Home. You can press the physical button, and Home Assistant does expose a self-test option you could build an automation around — but Apple Home users are limited to the manual button press. The Meross smoke alarms I’ve reviewed handle this better, with a built-in test schedule. It’s a minor thing but worth knowing.

Design and Installation

It looks like most smoke alarms — rounded, with a ring light on the outside and the display on the front. The back is removable for mounting. Nothing surprising, which is fine. You want a smoke alarm to blend in.

Installation is straightforward. Screw the mount to the wall or ceiling using the included screws and raw plugs, then pair the alarm before clipping it in.

To pair with Apple Home, flick the switch on the communications module on the back, open Apple Home, tap the plus icon and scan the QR code on the back. It paired without any issues. From there, I put it into pairing mode through Apple Home to add it to Home Assistant, which also worked without a hitch.

It shows up in Apple Home as two separate devices: a smoke detector and a carbon monoxide detector.

Using It

These are devices you hope you never actually need. But smart alarms do have real advantages over standard ones.

The obvious one: you get a critical notification to your phone and Apple Watch wherever you are, so if something triggers while you’re out you can act on it — contact a neighbour, check a camera, whatever’s needed.

The second advantage is automations. I have one set up so that if either alarm triggers, every light in the house turns on. That’s not just convenient — in a genuine emergency in the middle of the night, it could matter.

Does It Work?

For CO, Sensereo advise against exposing the sensor to actual carbon monoxide for testing purposes, so I’ve stuck to the self-test button rather than improvising something.

For smoke, I’d normally light something up and see what happens. I haven’t here, because Sensereo have deliberately made this alarm slightly less hair-trigger than some alternatives — while still meeting the EN14604 standard. The design targets smouldering smoke as well as flaming fires, which is the harder and more important job. In day-to-day use it hasn’t triggered accidentally, which is what you want.

Verdict

The MSC-1 is a solid, no-fuss smoke and CO alarm that pairs cleanly with Apple Home and Home Assistant. At the moment it’s the only dual smoke and carbon monoxide Matter alarm I know of. It’s more expensive than the smoke-only options from Aqara and Meross, but cheaper than the Nest ever was — and it covers both gases in one unit.

The only real gap is the self-test scheduling, which is Home Assistant-only for now. If Sensereo release their own app down the line that could be worth revisiting. For now it’s a minor inconvenience rather than a dealbreaker.

Check out the Sensereo MSC-1

The Sensereo MSC-1 is the first Matter over Thread smoke and carbon monoxide alarm I've come across — and it fills a gap that's been there for a while, especially since Google discontinued the Nest line.

Pick one up here: https://bit.ly/4bssDRy

In this review I cover the specs, how it pairs with Apple Home and Home Assistant, what it actually exposes to each platform, and where it falls short.

I tested this with Apple Home and Home Assistant. It pairs cleanly, exposes real-time CO readings and battery levels, and lets you build automations around both smoke and CO detection. The one thing missing for Apple Home users is scheduled self-testing — that's currently Home Assistant only.

At $70 it's more expensive than the smoke-only options from Aqara and Meross, but it combines two sensors and costs less than the Nest ever did.
Sensereo sent me this unit to review.

The Aqara G400 Video Doorbell is Aqara’s latest wired smart doorbell and one of the most interesting options available for Apple Home users. It supports Apple HomeKit Secure Video, Power-over-Ethernet connectivity, local storage, and multiple smart home platforms.

After using the Aqara G400 Video Doorbell for around a month, this review takes a detailed look at its design, features, setup process, and real-world performance to help you decide if it is the right smart doorbell for your home.

Design and Build Quality

The Aqara G400 Video Doorbell features a modern and minimal design with a black finish, rounded edges and a prominent illuminated doorbell button on the front. The lens sits above the button alongside the Aqara logo, giving the doorbell a clean and contemporary appearance that blends well with most homes.

The device includes a mounting bracket that can either be screwed into place or attached using adhesive pads. Aqara also includes an angled bracket if you need to adjust the viewing angle when installing the doorbell.

On the rear of the Aqara G400 Video Doorbell there is a removable block that reveals a MicroSD card slot as well as space for an ethernet cable. Two rear blocks are included in the box, allowing you to configure the doorbell differently depending on whether you are using ethernet or traditional doorbell wiring.

Unlike some previous Aqara video doorbells where the MicroSD card was installed in the indoor chime, the Aqara G400 Video Doorbell places the card slot directly inside the doorbell itself. This likely improves performance when uploading footage to cloud services, particularly when using ethernet connectivity.

The back of the device also contains QR codes used for pairing, so it is worth taking a photo of these before mounting the doorbell.

Indoor Chime

The Aqara G400 Video Doorbell also includes an indoor chime unit. This connects via USB-C power and features a rounded black design that matches the aesthetic of the doorbell itself.

The indoor chime handles alerts when someone presses the doorbell and can also be used for two-way communication and quick reply messages.

Overall, both components feel well designed and slightly smaller than Aqara’s previous wireless video doorbell models.

Video Quality and Field of View

One of the standout features of the Aqara G400 Video Doorbell is its vertical video format. It records in a 3:4 aspect ratio rather than the traditional horizontal view used by many doorbells.

This vertical orientation means that when installed at the correct height, the camera can capture a clear view of packages placed on your doorstep as well as visitors standing at the door.

The camera offers:

2K video recording in the Aqara app

165 degree wide field of view

Infrared night vision

Object detection using AI

When used with Apple HomeKit Secure Video, the footage is currently limited to 1080p resolution. This limitation comes from Apple’s HomeKit platform rather than the Aqara G400 Video Doorbell itself.

Smart Home Compatibility

The Aqara G400 Video Doorbell works with multiple smart home ecosystems including:

Apple HomeKit Secure Video

Amazon Alexa

Google Home

Samsung SmartThings

Home Assistant via RTSP

Apple Home integration is particularly strong. The Aqara G400 Video Doorbell supports HomeKit Secure Video which enables encrypted cloud recording and advanced features like face recognition.

Face recognition can identify people using the photos stored in your iCloud Photos library. Notifications can even tell you exactly who is at the door if the system recognises them.

Another useful feature is the ability to use Apple HomePods as additional doorbell chimes, ensuring you never miss a visitor.

Connectivity and Power Options

The Aqara G400 Video Doorbell can be powered in two different ways.

Power-over-Ethernet (PoE)

Traditional doorbell wiring with dual-band Wi-Fi

When using Wi-Fi, the doorbell supports Wi-Fi 6 with both 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks.

This flexibility makes the Aqara G400 Video Doorbell suitable for a wide range of installation scenarios. Ethernet connectivity is particularly useful for users who want the most stable connection possible.

Storage Options

The Aqara G400 Video Doorbell offers multiple storage options, which makes it possible to avoid ongoing subscription costs.

MicroSD card storage (up to 512GB)

Apple HomeKit Secure Video cloud storage

Network Attached Storage (NAS)

NAS support allows continuous 24-hour recording with loop recording if you want to maintain a local archive of footage.

Aqara also offers a cloud subscription service that unlocks additional AI features and extended cloud storage. However, many users will find that the built-in storage options combined with Apple HomeKit Secure Video are sufficient.

AI Detection and Notifications

The Aqara G400 Video Doorbell uses a combination of local and cloud AI detection to identify different types of activity.

Detection categories include:

People

Animals

Packages

Vehicles

Faces

You can customise notification settings and sensitivity levels to control exactly what triggers alerts.

Apple Home also allows you to choose which types of activity generate notifications. Many users may prefer managing alerts through Apple Home due to its powerful face recognition and notification system.

Virtual Fence and Motion Zones

The Aqara G400 Video Doorbell also includes a useful feature called a virtual fence. This allows you to draw a detection zone within the camera’s view.

This is particularly helpful if your doorbell camera captures part of the street or pavement, as you can focus detection on the area immediately around your door.

RTSP and Home Assistant Support

For advanced smart home users, the Aqara G400 Video Doorbell supports RTSP streaming. This allows the video feed to be integrated into platforms such as Home Assistant.

RTSP access makes the Aqara G400 Video Doorbell far more flexible than many competing smart doorbells which lock users into proprietary ecosystems.

Reliability and Daily Use

After several weeks of use, the Aqara G400 Video Doorbell has proven to be reliable with no connection dropouts.

Live video loads quickly in both the Aqara app and Apple Home. Notifications appear promptly and include snapshot previews when someone rings the doorbell.

Two-way audio works clearly enough for communicating with visitors or delivery drivers, and the illuminated button helps make the doorbell easier to see at night.

The vertical camera design also provides a particularly useful view of packages placed on the ground near the door.

Potential Downsides

While the Aqara G400 Video Doorbell offers many strengths, there are a few limitations worth noting.

The mounting bracket does not offer adjustable angles beyond the included wedge.

Some advanced AI features require an Aqara cloud subscription.

The device currently does not support Matter.

Matter camera support is still relatively new, so this may become more relevant as the standard evolves.

Final Verdict

The Aqara G400 Video Doorbell is an impressive smart doorbell that combines high-quality video, strong Apple Home integration and flexible connectivity options.

Its vertical video format, Power-over-Ethernet support, RTSP streaming and local storage options make it one of the most versatile smart doorbells available today.

For Apple users in particular, the Aqara G400 Video Doorbell stands out as one of the best HomeKit Secure Video doorbells currently available.

If you want a reliable smart doorbell with excellent smart home compatibility and the ability to avoid subscription fees, the Aqara G400 Video Doorbell is definitely worth considering.

Buy the Aqara G400 Video Doorbell

G410 Review: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d7r7fB66LZ0

I've been testing the Aqara G400 for around a month ahead of release, so in this review I cover design, features, setup, Apple Home integration and real-world use to help you decide if it’s the right smart doorbell for your home.

The G400 is Aqara’s first vertical video doorbell, designed to capture packages on your doorstep with its 3:4 aspect ratio and 165° field of view. It also works with Apple Home, Alexa, Google Home, SmartThings and Home Assistant, making it a very flexible smart home doorbell.

I also test how it performs with HomeKit Secure Video, including face recognition using iCloud Photos and HomePod doorbell chimes.

If you're looking for a reliable HomeKit doorbell without subscriptions, the Aqara G400 might be one of the best options available.

Introduction

Finding smart light switches in the UK can be challenging, especially since most require a neutral wire, which many homes don’t have. I’ve previously reviewed the Aqara H2 switch, but for my bedroom, I wanted a black switch, so I picked up the slightly older Aqara H1 EU No Neutral switch. While the H2 has more features, the H1 is still an excellent option for smart lighting, and in this review, we’ll explore its design, features, and usability.

Pricing and Options

The Aqara H1 EU switch retails at £32 and comes in black or white, with single or double rocker options. None of these require a neutral wire, which is perfect for UK homes.

Design and Build

The design is simple yet modern, and the black version looks particularly stylish. The button is very responsive, allowing you to click the whole surface easily. One limitation to note is that most smart bulbs won’t work directly with this switch—this is common across most smart light switches.

Specifications

Zigbee compatible, requiring an Aqara Hub (starting at £20)

Uses Zigbee 3.0 for stability

Works with Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, and Home Assistant when paired with an Aqara Hub

Advanced overheating protection built-in

Compatible with 2-way switches

Installation

The H1 is slightly thicker than an average light switch, so you might need a spacer. Start by removing the faceplate, ensuring your power is off, then swap the wires from your old switch to the H1. Attach the switch to the wall and replace the faceplate.

Much like the H2, I found it easiest to screw the backbox first so it was level with the front, then hook the H1 switch into place. After turning the power back on, open the Aqara app, hit the plus button, and follow the instructions to pair the switch with your hub. You can then name it and assign it to a room. If your Aqara Hub is already set up in Apple Home, the switch will appear automatically.

Note: Using a smart bulb with this switch may cause it to lose power and go offline.

App Settings

Power-off memory: retains the last state during power cuts

Option to turn off the small indicator light

Decoupling: buttons won’t cut off power to the light but can trigger scenes.

Performance and Usability

I’ve been using the Aqara H1 EU for a few months, and it performs very well. You can use it like a normal light switch while still taking advantage of smart automations. This is convenient for less tech-savvy family members and makes it easy to operate the switch with a light touch, even with your elbow when your hands are full.

The switch integrates with my home automation, including an ‘All Lights Off’ scene when the last person leaves, and works with Siri voice commands.

Pros and Cons

Pros:

Affordable and reliable

Modern design, especially the black version

Stays online consistently

Offers a balance of smart features and traditional physical control

Cons:

This doesn’t work with smart bulbs. The Aqara H2 EU does with their own smart bulbs

Conclusion

The Aqara H1 EU switch is a solid choice for anyone looking to add smart lighting to their home without rewiring for a neutral wire. It’s easy to install, integrates well with multiple smart home platforms, and combines physical control with automation. If you’re looking for a reliable and stylish smart switch, the H1 EU is a great option.
